From J2Store 4 to J2Commerce 6: What Changes for Your Store

A hand truck loaded with moving boxes and a clipboard stands beside tidy storeroom shelves.

If your store runs on J2Store 4 today, moving to J2Commerce 6 is a planned upgrade, not a rebuild. The first-party migrator carries your products, orders and customers across, your J2Store tables stay where they are, and you decide when shoppers see the new store.

This guide covers what you will notice as a store owner: what arrives on its own, what you set up fresh, and how to rehearse the whole move before a single shopper sees it.

What Moves Across on Its Own

The migrator reads your J2Store data and writes it into J2Commerce. Products and categories, variants, orders and order lines, customers, and billing and shipping addresses all make the trip, and prices, stock levels and SKUs travel with the products.

What the first-party migrator moves, and what you set up on the new store
Store data Moves automatically What to know
Products and categories Yes Names, descriptions, SKUs, prices, stock levels and the category tree.
Product variants Yes Option sets plus per-variant price, SKU and stock arrive with the parent product.
Orders and customers Yes Order numbers are preserved, and existing Joomla user accounts are reused.
Extensions and plugins No Install and configure the J2Commerce equivalent of each one you rely on.
Gateway credentials No Enter them fresh on the new store.
Storefront design No Your Joomla template plus the Bootstrap 5 or UIkit layouts in core carry the layout.

Variants Arrive with Their Parent Product

Open a migrated product and its options are already there. A shirt that comes in three colors is still one product with three variants, each with its own price, SKU and stock level.

Order Statuses Are Matched by Name

Status numbers differ from one install to the next, so the migrator matches statuses by name instead. If you have automations that react to an order status, key them to the status name and they behave the same on the new store.

Your Product Types in J2Commerce 6

Simple, Variable, Flexible Variant, Configurable and Downloadable products are all in the core package, so you can describe most catalogs without buying an add-on first. Extensions add further types, such as subscriptions and box builders, when your catalog needs them.

  • Use Simple for a product with one price and one stock count.
  • Use Variable or Flexible Variant for a product that comes in sizes, colors or other options.
  • Use Configurable when shoppers choose options that shape the product they order.
  • Use Downloadable when the shopper receives a file after paying.

A Checkout That Works on Install

PayPal, bank transfer, money order and cash on delivery work as soon as J2Commerce is installed, so your first test order does not wait on a gateway account. Your Joomla template carries the storefront, and core includes both Bootstrap 5 and UIkit layouts, so you pick the set that matches your template.

Good to Know

Stored gateway secrets never travel between installs. Enter your payment keys on the new store, then place a test payment before you launch.

Line Up Your Extensions

Extensions are code, not data, so each one you rely on needs its J2Commerce 6 equivalent installed and configured. Every listing in the extension store carries a J2C 6 or J2S 4 badge, so you always know which build fits your store. Start with the extensions that touch every order:

  • Payment methods
  • Shipping methods
  • Apps for email, accounting and marketing
  • Modules your pages display

Line up your extensions before you set a date.

Hundreds of extensions cover payments, shipping, marketing and more, and each listing states which build it fits.

Rehearse the Move Before Anyone Sees It

J2Commerce installs beside your old store rather than on top of it, so both run side by side while you work. Six staged steps take you from a copy of your site to a launch you have already tested:

  1. Clone the site. Copy the live site and its database to a staging address. Production stays untouched until the last step.
  2. Install J2Commerce. Install the package on the clone.
  3. Install the migrator. It adds its own screen to the J2Commerce admin menu.
  4. Map and import. Confirm the field mapping, then import in stages: products, then customers, then orders. Each stage reports what it wrote and what it skipped.
  5. Configure the parts that are code. Set up payment methods, shipping rates, tax rules and email templates, then place one real test order from start to finish.
  6. Cut over. Repeat the import on production during a quiet hour, switch the menu items and keep a redirect for every product URL whose path changed.

Keep selling on J2Store until your new store has passed every check you set.

Walk through the staging copy the way a shopper would before you switch anything on production.

There Is Always a Way Back

Every migrator writes only to J2Commerce tables and leaves your J2Store tables as they were. If you ever want to step back, point the menu items to the previous store and it is still there. Take a full database backup as well, for a second safeguard before you go live.

Before You Pick a Date

Your new store is ready to launch when each of these checks passes:

  • Products, variants and categories look right in the admin and on the storefront.
  • Customers can log in with their existing accounts.
  • A real test order completes from cart to confirmation email.
  • Each payment and shipping method you need is installed and configured.
  • Your Joomla 6 template and all site content have been reviewed and checked.
  • Payment plugins such as PayPal are out of sandbox mode and use your live credentials.
  • Every product URL whose path changed has a redirect.

When they all pass, run the cut-over during a quiet hour and watch the first few orders arrive.
