About J2Commerce

Joomla ecommerce, built by people who work in Joomla every day.

Adam Melcher and Olivier Buisard took over J2Store, the ecommerce extension for Joomla, in 2024 and rebuilt it from the ground up as J2Commerce 6, on Joomla’s own architecture.

A clay workbench where a storefront window is assembled from building blocks, with two empty desk chairs, a toolbox with a glowing yellow gear and a code tile floating nearby.

Our Story

How J2Store became J2Commerce.

J2Commerce is the current name of J2Store, the ecommerce extension for Joomla. This is how it got here.

Where It Started

J2Store was a widely used ecommerce extension for Joomla, and agencies, freelancers and store owners ran real businesses on it. When its original development ended, Adam Melcher, who had built many stores on it, asked Olivier Buisard to join him in taking it over. The two knew each other from Joomla Day USA, where Adam had joined the team that organizes the annual event.

Taking Over

In October 2024 the two took over stewardship of J2Store. The former developers, led by Ramesh Elamathi, handed over the extensions already migrated to Joomla 4 and many still on Joomla 3, and the new team filled the remaining gaps one by one. A new website with downloads, documentation and a support ticket system followed, along with a better migration tool from J2Store 3 to 4 and a steady run of patches.

Rebuilding It

J2Store was built on an outside framework and jQuery. J2Commerce 6 replaces both and runs on Joomla 6’s own architecture, so your store upgrades alongside Joomla. The J2Commerce 6 page covers what changed, and the migration page covers how stores move across.

Our Timeline

Our mission is ecommerce that works the way Joomla does.

J2Commerce exists to give Joomla stores more out of the box than any other free ecommerce platform, to keep Joomla ecommerce current, and to stay close to what store owners, agencies and freelancers need.

Our Vision

We want Joomla ecommerce current, open and easy to join.

J2Commerce 6 is the actively developed line, and where it goes next is public.

  • Current With Joomla

Support follows Joomla’s own release cycle, so your store runs a version of J2Commerce that matches the Joomla underneath it.

  • Built in the Open

Every issue is public. So are the fixes. The public roadmap shows what is being explored, built and released.

  • Easy to Join In

Documentation, translations and patches can all be contributed on GitHub, and staying close to Joomla’s own conventions keeps extensions simple to build.

What We Value

Four principles guide how we build J2Commerce.

These principles shape how J2Commerce is written, released and supported.

  • GPLv2 or Later

Unlimited products and orders, with no license audit.

    GPLv2+ License

  • Joomla-Native

Where the old code invented its own way of doing something Joomla already did, Joomla’s way won. Layout overrides behave the way they do everywhere else in Joomla.

  • Store Owners First

Feedback from agencies, freelancers and store owners set the first priorities: Joomla 4 compatibility, simpler migration and the essential extensions.

  • Disclosure in Public

Every advisory is published for you to read.
