Hi Olivier, about ticket #510: Compatibility with Joomla 6, can you help me understand better what you mean when you write: «What we are offering is a brand new extension com_j2commerce that is able to sit next to your J2Store shop. So that you are able to compare and make sure the new shop works as well as the old one before you switch over. This needs to be done under Joomla 5.»? On a production, active site, how would it work?

Will there be a migration tool or will it be a normal upgrade? Sorry, but I don't think I understand what will happen.
Thanks a lot

Adam Melcher

Antonio,

I can (hopefully) explain it :)

What Olivier was referring to is that the new J2Commerce 5 (Joomla 6 native) will be com_j2commerce instead of com_j2store. The database table structure will remain the same but upon install of the new component, it will check if you already have an existing copy of com_j2store installed. If you do, it will copy the databasebase tables and change the names from #__j2store_ to #__j2commerce_ .

By doing this, you will be able to run both on Joomla 5 so you can make sure everything works the way it should (both front-end and back-end) all while your current J2Store/J2Commerce extension is working as it has. Once you are satisfied everything works as it should, we will have an option to sync  the current j2store database tables with the newer j2commerce tables so all of your newer orders and customers are loaded into the newer component ready to go. You would just need to change the menu links from the older install to the newer one (or if you have already created the menu llinks while testing it out, you would just need to turn off the older menu items) and you should be good to go.

We are working on making this as seamless as possible to you aren't having to rebuild your store all over again. I have 50+ sites that need to go through this process so if nothing else, I promise you I need to make it easy for me to migrate my stores as well :)

Hope this helps,

Adam

Thanks for reply
I think I'll have to try it out for myself because I'm still struggling to understand how they can be used simultaneously: will a new order be registered by both components? Will there be a switch to decide whether to use j2store or j2commerce? Will it be necessary to replace the {j2store}27|cart{/j2store} tag in all products?
I have a lot of confidence in your work, these are just questions I'm asking myself to imagine the transition.

Anyway, running the pre-update check from Joomla 5.3.4 to 5.4 I get a lot of Update Information Unavailable messages about J2store. Is it ok to upgrade?
Regards

Antonio,

You can update to 5.4 without any issues.

As far as J2Commerce version 5: We are still working on all of the details and will have migration guides to ensure a smooth experience.

Since J2C Version 5 will technically be a different component under the hood, you could run them at the same time so you could test the new version. Orders from version 4 would stay in version 4, and similar to the Akeeba Backup transition from 3 to 4 where there was two version running - when you click the cleanup button, ot would uninstall the older extension and update the newer tables with the data from the older ones.

There will be new features as well such as drag and drop image fields so you can add multiple images to products at the same time as well as new product option fields such as color options, etc

We will release more information as we get closer but rest assured with the confidence that all of our stores will be stronger than ever...
