my use case is too add a year field for product watch detail page so that user knows it's from 2026, 2025, etc...
Filter by year is good to have, but not a must.
I wonder if I should use the joomla core custom field or j2store custom field for this use case.
Ok, what you could do:
Create a filter (Catalog -> Filters), give it a language key for the filter name, like JYEAR so it gets translated automatically by Joomla. Add the years you want to make available.
In each product, set the filter according to the values you need. For instance, go to the 'Filters' tab, search for JYEAR and select the year(s) you need to set your product to.
Now, if you need to show the year in each product as a custom field, you could try the add-on https://www.j2commerce.com/extensions/apps/content-custom-fields.
