Last week, I successfully completed a full migration of my store from VirtueMart to J2Commerce 6, and I’m honestly very happy with the result. J2Commerce is a solid, scalable and easy-to-edit store system, but I still needed to adapt quite a few things to my own workflow and business needs. During that process, I created several custom solutions — and I’d like to share one small plugin that I’m pretty sure many J2Commerce users will appreciate. I’m convinced I’m not the only one who was seriously annoyed by the product editing screen being cluttered with a lot of unnecessary com_content tabs.
This plugin fixes that UX problem.
When you open a J2Commerce product in the Joomla administrator panel, the plugin hides the unnecessary article tabs and automatically opens the default J2Commerce tab selected in the plugin settings. It keeps the editing screen cleaner, faster and much less irritating to use. The plugin is simple, free, and shared as-is. If it helps you — great. If not — no problem, just don’t use it. ;-)

A lot has changed on my site already, and I still change or add something almost every day. I don’t really like template-based solutions, so I often rebuild the default component behavior in my own way.

Not because the original solutions are bad — I just have a slightly different sales philosophy. J2Commerce gives a very wide range of possibilities, and that is exactly why I like working with it.

At the moment, my store is fully cached, while dynamic elements are loaded through AJAX. This was very important for me, because I wanted some parts of the site to stay invisible to bots.

Bots are now a serious load for websites and even entire servers, so this kind of optimization was crucial for me. I also wanted to avoid captcha, because in many cases it only hurts performance and user experience.

Instead of using a stupid captcha, cookie-based triggers are enough to activate AJAX modules such as the product search or contact form only when a real user actually needs them. ;-)

Yesterday I also managed to add a new option to my store, which I don’t think many shops have — a new default product sorting mode. Standard product sorting is always the same, so when a customer visits the site every day, they may feel like they are seeing the same products again and again.

That is why I created a random for today sorting mode. Every day at midnight, the product order changes randomly. The new daily product order is generated during the night by cron, so customers get a fresh product list each day, while the site can still stay cached and fast.
